AKUAPEM
ODWIRA FESTIVAL TOUR
Celebration of “Odwira” by the people of Akuapem started after the capture of the cultural artifacts pertaining to its celebration from the Ashantis during the Akatamanso War in 1826. Odwira is an Akan word for purification. Akuapem traditional area is located on the Akuapem hills which is only forty five minutes drive from Accra, the national capital.

Odwira is one of the most colourful and highly patronised cultural events in Ghana. The week long ceremony is crowned by a grand durbar of chiefs.

DURATION: Six (6) days. Most interesting days for tourists are Thursdays Traditional New Year Day, and Fridays on which there is a splendid cultural parade of chiefs and Grand Durbar. ABOAKYER FESTIVAL
Aboakyer,
meaning animal-hunting is one of Ghana's most exciting
festivals. The main highlight of the weeklong festival involves
the live-hunting or catching by hand of a bushbuck antelope.

THEME
Traditional conservation of wildlife.
INFORMATION
Visitors will admire the wonderful purification custom whereby
the sacrificial bushbuck antelope is hunted by competing youth groups.
The animal is sacrificed to the gods of the Effutu state to ask
for blessings upon the state for the traditional new year.
DURATION:
One week: the main highlight starts in the early hours of Saturday
and reaches its climax in mid-afternoon.

HANDICRAFT TRAIL

The various handicrafts produced in the country are a depiction of the artistic skills and the rich cultural heritage of the Ghanaian people. The most commonly patronized easy-to-carry handicrafts are wood carvings, kente cloth, adinkra cloth, and paintings of Ghanaian artists.

STARTING POINT
Accra arts and crafts bazaar.
ROUTE
The trail starts with a visit to the Accra arts and crafts bazaar, as well as the exclusive gallery of Artists Alliance near Accra. The trail continues to the Aburi wood carving village in Akuapem, Bonwire kente village, Ntonso adinkra cloth village, and Ahwiaa wood carving village, all in Ashanti.
The trail ends at Centre for National Culture, Kumasi.
DURATION: Two ( 2 ) days, inclusive of travel time to locations outside Accra and night stop in Kumasi. |
