The Historical Heritage of Ghana relates to the relics of the encounters between the local people and Europeans in the
mid 15th and 20th centuries, inter-tribal wars, missionary activities and the struggle for self-government.
Monuments of significance, and unique to Ghana, are numerous forts and castles built along the coast, first as trading posts and later as transit points for slaves, a fascinating collection of historical treasures of Ghana in National museum, and Manhyia Palace museum.

city of Accra became Ghana's capital in 1877 when the British moved
the capital from Cape Coast.

On this trail, you will learn about Ghana's struggle for independence, the role of Kwame Nkrumah the first president of Ghana, W.E.B. Du Bois and George Padmore, eminent Pan-Africanists. You will see also some historical monuments and a fascinating collection of historical treasures of Ghana in the National Museum, Ghana's premier University which has an acknowledged Institute of African studies and School of Performing Arts.

STARTING
POINT
Independence Square where tourists will be briefed by a Tour Guide
on highlights of the trail and thereafter lead them to see significant
historical monuments.
ROUTE
From the Independence Square which is dominated by the Independence
Arch and a memorial to the Unknown Soldier, the visitor will see
the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, the National Museum, W.E.B. Du Bois
Centre for Pan-African Studies, George Padmore memorial Library
and University of Ghana, Legon.

ELMINA CASTLE TOUR
Built
in 1482, the castle has been designated by UNESCO as
World Heritage Site.

INFORMATION
On this trail, you will learn about the first encounter of the local people with Europeans, abolition of the slave trade and its aftermath, and the sojourn of King Prempeh I, of the Ashantis. Brace yourself for an emotional encounter.
STARTING
POINT
Elmina Castle Courtyard where a Guide of the Museum and Monuments
Board receives all guests and then conducts them through the castle.
ROUTE
The castle courtyard, the male and female dungeons with relics of
shackles and chains, apartments of the Governor, the condemned cells,
the British auction rooms where slaves were sold and bought, the
exit point of no return, an early Portuguese church,
and the transit apartment of the exiled Ashanti monarch, King Agyemang
Prempeh I in 1900.

KUMASI HISTORICAL TRAIL
Founded
in 1695 by King Osei Tutu I, Kumasi is acknowledged as the cultural
capital of Ghana.

Kumasi Fort, now Ghana Armed Forces Museum
INFORMATION
On this trail, you will learn about the Ashanti Kingdom, the founding
of Kumasi, the role of the legendary hero and Chief Priest Okomfo
Anokye in the establishment of the Ashanti Kingdom, and the numerous
wars between the Ashantis and the British. You will see on this
trail, the mythical Okomfo Anokye Sword, driven into the ground by the chief priest in the 17th century and which according to legend,
no one has been able to uproot as prophesized by Anokye. Tourists will also learn about the
19th century British fort and Military Museum which contains significant
military artifacts, while the Manhyia Palace Museum has on exhibit
a collection of more Ashanti historical relics.
STARTING POINT
Manhyia Palace secretariat where all guests will be received by a Guide of the Manhyia Palace Museum who tells the history of the Ashanti Kingdom and then conducts tourists through the museum.
